Starting Jiu Jitsu After 30 and 40: A Journey of Growth and Resilience at El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu

Starting Jiu Jitsu as an adult can feel intimidating, especially if you’re stepping on the mats for the first time after 30 or 40. You may wonder if your body can handle the intensity, if you’re too late to start, or how you’ll compare to younger training partners. The truth is, training Jiu Jitsu as an adult offers a unique and rewarding experience that can transform your physical health, mindset, and approach to life.

At El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu, we see countless members in their 30s, 40s, and beyond embracing the challenge of Jiu Jitsu and thriving. Here’s what makes this experience so special:

1. A New Beginning: It’s Never Too Late

Whether you’re 30 or 50, starting Jiu Jitsu introduces you to a journey of continuous learning. The beauty of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is that it’s more than just a sport—it’s an art form that promotes problem-solving and strategy, as well as physical conditioning. Age doesn’t limit your ability to pick up new skills or develop a deep understanding of technique. Many of our students say they feel like they’ve uncovered a hidden passion they wish they had found earlier, but also recognize that their maturity helps them appreciate it even more.

2. Physical Benefits: Strength, Mobility, and Longevity

One of the biggest concerns for adults starting Jiu Jitsu is the physical aspect. After 30 or 40, it’s common to notice changes in your body—whether that’s reduced flexibility, nagging injuries, or general wear and tear. However, Jiu Jitsu offers a low-impact way to improve strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular health. By focusing on leverage and technique, Jiu Jitsu teaches you to use your body more efficiently, which translates into better mobility and resilience in daily life. We have members who started with limited mobility but have seen tremendous improvements in their physical health over time.

3. Mental Growth: Patience, Problem-Solving, and Grit

One of the greatest gifts Jiu Jitsu gives to adults is the mental transformation. Life after 30 or 40 often brings its own set of stressors—careers, families, and responsibilities. On the mats, you’re challenged to stay present, think strategically, and adapt to changing situations. Whether you’re in a tough position or learning a new technique, Jiu Jitsu fosters patience and mental toughness. Every time you push through a difficult roll or master a new skill, you’re training your mind as much as your body.

4. Community and Camaraderie

At El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu, our adult classes are filled with students from diverse backgrounds and experiences. What unites us is the shared journey on the mats, regardless of age. Training with peers who understand the physical and mental demands of starting later in life creates a sense of camaraderie that’s hard to find elsewhere. Many of our members say they feel like they’ve joined a second family. The support and encouragement you receive from teammates, combined with the guidance of experienced coaches, makes the experience both rewarding and motivating.

5. Setting a Positive Example

For many adults, starting Jiu Jitsu is also about setting an example for their children or showing that personal growth doesn’t have an age limit. At El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu, we often see parents training alongside their kids or inspiring younger members to persevere. It’s a powerful way to demonstrate resilience, discipline, and a commitment to self-improvement, no matter your age. Being a role model for the younger generation—whether it’s your own kids or other students in the gym—reinforces that the pursuit of excellence and learning is a lifelong journey. Your decision to step on the mat can have a ripple effect, inspiring those around you to embrace challenges and growth in their own lives.

6. Overcoming Challenges: It’s a Marathon, Not a Sprint

Starting Jiu Jitsu later in life may come with certain challenges. Recovery times might be longer, and you may need to adjust your training intensity to avoid injury. However, the key is consistency and pacing yourself. Jiu Jitsu is a marathon, not a sprint, and progress will come steadily with dedication. At El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu, our instructors understand these challenges and work with you to ensure a sustainable training regimen that helps you improve while respecting your body’s limits. The sense of accomplishment you feel with each small victory far outweighs the initial struggles, making the journey deeply fulfilling.

7. Rediscovering Yourself

Jiu Jitsu is a journey of self-discovery, regardless of age. As an adult, you come to the mats with life experiences that shape how you approach training. Over time, you learn to push through physical and mental barriers, building confidence and resilience. You may find yourself becoming more patient, focused, and adaptable, both on and off the mats. For many, Jiu Jitsu becomes not just a hobby but a path to personal growth, bringing new purpose and excitement to life after 30 and 40.

Exploring Jiu Jitsu Through the Wisdom of Winnie the Pooh

Starting Jiu Jitsu can feel like stepping into the unknown—something new, exciting, and maybe even a little daunting. At El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu, we understand that. Whether you’re new to martial arts or thinking about giving it a try, we believe everyone can find a bit of themselves on the mats. Surprisingly, the journey of learning Jiu Jitsu can be related to the charming, timeless lessons from a certain honey-loving bear and his friends from the Hundred Acre Wood. That’s right, Winnie the Pooh!

Here’s how you can see your Jiu Jitsu journey through the eyes of Pooh and his pals:

“You’re braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.” – Christopher Robin

When you first step onto the mats, it’s easy to feel out of place or overwhelmed. There’s a lot to learn—positions, techniques, and a different way of moving your body. It can feel like being lost in a forest, but like Christopher Robin reminds Pooh, you are more capable than you realize. Jiu Jitsu is all about discovering your inner strength, building confidence, and realizing that you can achieve more than you ever imagined. Your first class is just the beginning of discovering your bravery.

“Rivers know this: there is no hurry. We shall get there someday.” – Winnie the Pooh

Progress in Jiu Jitsu is a journey, not a race. Just as Pooh approaches life with calm and patience, the mats teach us the same. You won’t learn everything in a day, and that’s okay! Jiu Jitsu is a practice of constant growth, where small improvements add up over time. Trust the process, and remember to enjoy each step along the way—whether you’re learning how to escape from mount or drilling the basics of guard. Like Pooh, embrace the joy of the journey.

“It never hurts to keep looking for sunshine.” – Eeyore

Sometimes Jiu Jitsu can be tough. You might feel stuck in a position, frustrated with a technique, or even feel like giving up. But, as Eeyore reminds us, it’s always possible to find the bright side. There’s always a lesson in every roll, whether you win or lose. When things seem hard, focus on what you’re learning and the small victories—like improving your guard retention or simply showing up for class on a tough day.

“A little consideration, a little thought for others, makes all the difference.” – Eeyore

Jiu Jitsu is a team sport as much as it is an individual one. Your training partners are essential to your progress, and being considerate on the mats is crucial. Just like Pooh and his friends help each other out, in Jiu Jitsu, you’ll find a community that supports and challenges you. We train hard, but we do so with respect and care for each other’s safety. Every partner helps you grow, and you’ll soon find that you’re part of something bigger than yourself.

“Think it over, think it under.” – Winnie the Pooh

Pooh is known for taking time to reflect (usually over a pot of honey). Jiu Jitsu is a mental game as much as a physical one. As you train, you’ll learn to think things through—whether it’s figuring out how to improve a technique or applying a new concept during sparring. The ability to problem-solve is key in Jiu Jitsu. Every class is an opportunity to ‘think it over’ and refine what you’ve learned, even if it takes some time.

“A friend is one of the nicest things you can have, and one of the best things you can be.” – Winnie the Pooh

At El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu, you’ll quickly discover that the friendships you make on the mats are special. Like Pooh’s tight-knit group of friends, our gym community is supportive, welcoming, and encouraging. Whether you’re just starting or have been training for years, we’re all here to help each other grow. You’ll find lifelong friends and training partners who share in your successes and help you through challenges.

Welcome to Your Journey

Starting Jiu Jitsu is like entering the Hundred Acre Wood—a place full of discovery, learning, and camaraderie. At El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu, we’re here to guide you every step of the way. Whether you feel like Tigger bouncing into a new adventure, Pooh happily learning something new, or even Eeyore slowly but surely finding your way, your journey on the mats will be uniquely yours.

Come join us, and remember: you’re braver, stronger, and smarter than you think.

Jon Chan’s Black Belt Promotion and Seminar at El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu

On October 1st, El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu celebrated a significant milestone in the journey of one of its dedicated members—Jon Chan. After 15 years of hard work, perseverance, and dedication to the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Jon was officially promoted to black belt. This achievement not only marks a personal triumph for Jon but also reflects the values of discipline, resilience, and growth that our gym strives to instill in each of its members.

A Journey of Hard Work and Dedication

Jon’s promotion to black belt represents a journey that began years ago with a white belt and a dream. Like many, Jon started at the bottom, learning the fundamentals, honing his technique, and pushing through challenges along the way. His commitment to improvement and his consistent presence on the mats have been an inspiration to everyone at El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu. As a competitor and a leader, Jon exemplifies the tenets of martial arts and has become a role model for students of all levels.

In addition to his promotion, Jon taught his first black belt seminar, sharing some of his favorite techniques and concepts that helped him reach this level. Students were treated to insights from Jon’s experience as both a competitor and a technician. His seminar offered an opportunity for everyone in the room to learn from someone who has walked the path from white to black, with countless hours of training and a deep passion for the art.

A Family Moment: Promoting Logan to Blue Belt

In what made the day even more special, Jon had the honor of promoting his son, Logan, to blue belt. Watching Logan’s own growth in the sport has been a joy for the entire gym. Father and son have trained side by side for years, pushing each other to improve and sharing countless hours on the mats. To see Jon, now a black belt, present Logan with his blue belt was a touching moment for everyone in attendance. It was not just the celebration of one promotion but the continuation of a family legacy in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

As Jon shared, “There’s nothing more meaningful than being able to pass on what I’ve learned to the next generation. To promote Logan to blue belt on the day I received my black belt is an experience I’ll never forget.”

Looking Ahead

Jon’s black belt is a testament to his perseverance, dedication, and passion for Jiu Jitsu. At El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu, we are incredibly proud of Jon and look forward to seeing him continue to grow as both a martial artist and a coach. His seminar marked the beginning of a new chapter in his journey, and we are excited to see where it takes him and his family.

Congratulations, Jon, on your black belt and Logan on your blue belt—both incredible achievements that reflect the strength and unity of our Jiu Jitsu family!

Be sure to stay tuned for more updates, seminars, and exciting moments from the El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu community!

Back Control: A Crucial Position for BJJ Beginners

When you first begin your Brazilian Jiu Jitsu journey at El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu, one of the key concepts you’ll encounter is learning to control your opponent from dominant positions. Among the most powerful and fundamental of these is back control. Mastering this position early on can set the stage for your long-term success in BJJ.

What is Back Control?

Back control occurs when you have your legs hooked around your opponent’s hips, your chest against their back, and ideally, your arms controlling their upper body. This is one of the most dominant positions in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu because your opponent has few options to attack or defend, while you have several submission opportunities available. Most notably, the rear naked choke is a finishing move often executed from this position.

Why Should Beginners Focus on Back Control?

  1. Dominance and Safety
Back control offers a significant advantage in both competition and self-defense. From this position, you are behind your opponent, out of reach of their strikes or counters, giving you the ability to control their movement without being vulnerable to attack. Learning this early gives beginners a sense of safety and control during rolls.
  2. Submission Opportunities
From the back, there are many submission options that are both fundamental and effective. The rear naked choke is often one of the first submissions taught, as it capitalizes on the control you have over your opponent’s body. Once you have back control, submissions feel within reach, building your confidence as a beginner.
  3. Transitional Awareness
Learning to maintain back control also helps beginners develop an understanding of transitions. It’s common for opponents to try and escape back control, and learning to follow them, adjust your hooks, and maintain control will strengthen your overall game. As you progress, you’ll learn how to seamlessly transition between back control, mount, and other dominant positions.
  4. Defense Training
While back control is an offensive powerhouse, understanding this position as a beginner will also help you improve your defense. You’ll learn what to avoid and how to escape when an opponent gains back control on you, which is just as important as learning how to maintain it.

How to Approach Back Control as a Beginner

At El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu, we emphasize drilling back control with a focus on proper technique and patience. As a beginner, here are a few things to keep in mind when practicing this position:

  • Stay tight to your opponent: Keep your chest glued to their back, with your hooks securely in place. This makes it harder for your opponent to escape.
  • Focus on control before submission: Don’t rush to finish your opponent. Learn how to maintain control first, and submissions will follow.
  • Be aware of your opponent’s escape attempts: A good defense from your opponent will be trying to roll or escape your hooks. Anticipating and preventing their escapes will improve your game immensely.

Back control is one of the most powerful and effective positions in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and it’s a position that beginners should learn early on. By mastering this position, you’ll gain confidence in your ability to control an opponent and finish the fight, whether in a competitive match or a self-defense situation.

At El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu, our curriculum ensures that every student, no matter their level, builds a strong foundation in back control and other fundamental positions. Start your journey by learning how to control, submit, and defend from the back—and watch your BJJ game transform!

3 Helpful Tips When You Start Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or Martial Arts

Starting your journey in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) or any martial art is an exciting and rewarding experience, but it can also be a bit intimidating. At El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu, we often see new students who aren’t sure where to begin. Whether you’re brand new to the sport or revisiting it after a break, these three tips will help you feel more confident and get the most out of your training.

1. Be Patient with Yourself
One of the most important lessons you’ll learn early on in BJJ or any martial art is that progress takes time. It’s easy to compare yourself to more advanced students or feel frustrated when a technique doesn’t click right away. Remember, every black belt was once a beginner. Focus on the small wins – mastering the basics, improving your movement, or simply showing up consistently. The path to growth in martial arts is long, but it’s also deeply fulfilling. Trust the process and enjoy the journey.

2. Focus on the Fundamentals
In martial arts, the foundation is everything. While it might be tempting to try advanced techniques or imitate what you see in competitions, mastering the basics is what will set you up for success. In BJJ, for example, learning positions like guard, mount, and side control, along with basic escapes, will give you a strong understanding of how to control your opponent. At El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu, our curriculum is designed to help students build a solid foundation, starting with 12 key positions and more than 350 movements. By focusing on the fundamentals, you’ll be better prepared for more advanced techniques down the line.

3. Embrace the Learning Environment
When you start training in martial arts, you’re not just learning from your instructor – you’re also learning from your training partners. One of the best things about BJJ is that it’s a cooperative, friendly environment. Ask questions, watch others, and don’t be afraid to tap when necessary. The more open you are to learning from every roll and every sparring session, the faster you’ll improve. At El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu, we emphasize community, which means you’re surrounded by teammates who want to see you succeed as much as you want to improve.

Starting Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or martial arts can feel overwhelming at first, but with patience, focus, and the right mindset, you’ll see progress quickly. At El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu, we’re here to support you every step of the way, whether it’s your first class or your hundredth.

Incorporating Wrestling and Judo into Training at El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu

At El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu, we believe in creating well-rounded martial artists by blending the best aspects of multiple disciplines. While Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) forms the core of our training, we also incorporate key elements of wrestling and judo, adding variety to our techniques and improving our members’ overall grappling skillsets.

Wrestling: Emphasizing Control and Takedowns

Wrestling offers powerful tools for controlling opponents and gaining advantageous positions. Our classes frequently integrate wrestling techniques like the single-leg and double-leg takedowns, emphasizing a strong base and explosive movement. Under the guidance of former wrestlers, students learn how to apply these techniques with precision, especially when transitioning from standing to ground combat. Whether you’re a beginner learning to chain together basic takedowns or an advanced student looking to sharpen your control, our integration of wrestling into Jiu Jitsu ensures a well-rounded ground game.

Judo: Leveraging Throws and Balance

Judo’s focus on off-balancing an opponent and executing throws adds another dimension to our training. In class, we incorporate judo techniques such as the Ouchi Gari (inner reap) and Seoi Nage (shoulder throw), teaching students how to blend them into their Jiu Jitsu strategy. Our instruction emphasizes timing and leverage, giving students the ability to execute throws effectively even against larger opponents. By combining Judo throws with BJJ groundwork, members gain a seamless connection between standing and grappling, making their training more comprehensive.

The Benefits of Blending Disciplines

The integration of wrestling and judo gives our students the tools to deal with any grappling situation. Whether it’s transitioning from standing to the ground or controlling an opponent once you’re down, this blend improves versatility and confidence. Plus, these additional skill sets make our members more competitive in tournaments where takedowns and throws often determine the pace of the match.

We are proud to offer this unique approach to training, keeping El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu a place where students of all backgrounds and skill levels can continue to evolve. Whether you’re looking to improve your wrestling, judo, or Jiu Jitsu, our gym offers an environment where you can learn and apply techniques from each discipline, growing your abilities in all areas of grappling.

Join us on the mats to experience how wrestling and judo are seamlessly integrated into our training sessions!

The Value of Fitness for Adults: Why Jiu Jitsu is the Perfect Solution

In today’s fast-paced world, finding the time and motivation for fitness can be a challenge, especially for adults juggling work, family, and other responsibilities. However, prioritizing physical fitness isn’t just about looking good – it’s about enhancing quality of life, maintaining health, and staying sharp mentally. At El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu, we believe that Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) offers a perfect balance for adults looking to improve their fitness while enjoying a community-centered activity.

Fitness That Goes Beyond the Gym

Traditional fitness routines like lifting weights or running on a treadmill have their place, but they can often feel repetitive. Jiu Jitsu, on the other hand, offers a dynamic full-body workout that improves strength, endurance, flexibility, and mental acuity. As you practice BJJ techniques, your body learns to move more efficiently, and you get stronger without even realizing you’re “working out.”

Cardiovascular and Strength Benefits

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu provides an intense cardiovascular workout that challenges the heart and lungs. With its fast-paced nature, grappling sessions elevate the heart rate, improving cardiovascular endurance. At the same time, the bodyweight resistance and leverage-based techniques build strength and muscle endurance, making BJJ a great alternative to traditional strength training. Whether you’re rolling with a partner or drilling techniques, every session pushes you physically while building up a more resilient body.

A Low-Impact Option for Longevity

One of the common concerns for adults is the risk of injury in high-impact sports. Fortunately, Jiu Jitsu is largely low-impact, focusing on leverage and technique rather than brute force. While every sport carries some risk, BJJ minimizes strain on the body, making it an excellent choice for adults in their 30s, 40s, and even 50s who want to stay active without the wear and tear that can come from more aggressive physical activities.

Mental Health and Stress Relief

Fitness is not just about physical health—your mental well-being is equally important. Adults deal with stress on a daily basis, and Jiu Jitsu offers an effective way to relieve that tension. The intense focus required during training helps clear your mind, offering a much-needed mental break from daily pressures. Plus, learning new skills and improving over time gives a confidence boost, which can translate into other areas of life.

Community and Accountability

One of the biggest benefits of training at El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu is the sense of community you build. Our classes bring together adults from all walks of life who share the common goal of improving their fitness and their skills. Training partners become friends, and this camaraderie creates an environment of accountability and encouragement. When you’re part of a team, you’re more likely to show up, put in the work, and stay committed to your fitness goals.

Why Start Now?

It’s never too late to make fitness a priority. Whether you’re looking to lose weight, get stronger, or simply improve your quality of life, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu can provide the physical and mental benefits you need. At El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu, our adult classes are designed for all experience levels, and our experienced coaches are here to guide you every step of the way.
