Ruckus in the Hills: A Night of Grit, Growth, and Community at El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu

This Wednesday night, El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu hosted our latest in-house tournament—Ruckus in the Hills—and the energy in the dojo was electric. With competitors from our Peewee, Kids, and Junior/Teen programs stepping onto the mats, the evening was filled with exciting matches, fearless effort, and incredible moments of progress.

From the explosive takedowns in the Junior division to the relentless scrambles in the Kids matches, and the high-energy, heart-filled efforts of our Peewees, the Ruckus delivered on every level. We saw students who’ve been training for several years showcase polished techniques, and brand-new white belts take their first bold step into live competition. Each age group brought something special to the mats—and every competitor brought courage and commitment.

There’s a saying that sums up what this event is about: “Try again. Fail again. Fail better.” Jiu Jitsu teaches us to embrace challenges. To get back up after we fall. To learn from every match, win or lose. It was inspiring to watch students walk off the mat—sometimes with a medal, sometimes without—but always with a smile and a spark to keep training.

This event was also a powerful reminder of how far we’ve come.

Fourteen years ago, when we held our very first in-house tournament, one person ran the entire show—referee, timekeeper, scorekeeper, medic, coach, and mat coordinator all in one. It was grassroots Jiu Jitsu at its rawest, driven by passion and a love for the art.

Now, thanks to the incredible support of our parents and volunteers, we’ve built something so much bigger. We had designated roles for each area of the event, allowing things to run smoothly and professionally. The atmosphere was supportive, structured, and welcoming—proof that we’re not just building martial artists, we’re building a community.

And speaking of community, we had a special treat this time: Alex from Cali Açaí set up a stand at the event, serving up delicious bowls that hit the spot after some tough rounds. It was the perfect post-match refresher and a great way to bring everyone together off the mats, too.

At El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu, our motto is “Getting Stronger Together.” That was on full display at Ruckus in the Hills. Whether you were competing, coaching, refereeing, volunteering, or just cheering from the sidelines, you were part of something meaningful.

To all the families from El Dorado Hills, Cameron Park, Folsom, and beyond—thank you for helping us create a space where challenge is welcomed, effort is celebrated, and growth is the true goal.

Here’s to the next Ruckus—and to continuing the journey, together.
