Building Strong Youth Through Sports: Insights from Dr. Dan Gould

At El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu, our youth program is about more than just learning techniques and building physical fitness—it’s about creating confident, resilient, and well-rounded individuals. Recently, we’ve been reflecting on the work of Dr. Dan Gould, director of the Michigan State University Center for Youth Sports. Dr. Gould’s research offers invaluable insights into how coaches, parents, and programs like ours can positively influence young athletes.

The Role of Youth Sports in Life Skills Development

Dr. Gould emphasizes that youth sports should be a vehicle for teaching critical life skills like discipline, teamwork, leadership, and emotional resilience. At El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu, we see these skills come alive on the mats every day. Whether a young student is learning to persevere after a tough round of sparring or practicing respect through bowing to a training partner, these lessons transcend the sport itself.

As Dr. Gould highlights, sports don’t automatically teach life skills—they must be intentionally woven into training. This is why we hold monthly Mat Chats in our youth program, focusing on values like integrity, humility, safety, and bravery. By combining Jiu Jitsu with meaningful life discussions, we help students make connections between their practice and their daily lives.

Creating a Positive Youth Sports Environment

Dr. Gould’s research stresses the importance of a positive sports environment—one that balances competitiveness with encouragement and learning. For us, this means fostering a culture where mistakes are seen as opportunities to grow. A child may not always hit the perfect technique, but through patient coaching and reinforcement, they’ll learn to embrace challenges rather than fear failure.

We also encourage parents to focus on effort and progress over winning or losing. As Dr. Gould points out, parents and coaches who highlight a child’s personal improvement rather than external results are more likely to keep kids motivated, confident, and happy.

Avoiding Burnout and Keeping Sports Fun

One of Dr. Gould’s most important messages is that sports should be fun, especially for younger athletes. Overemphasizing competition can lead to burnout and cause kids to drop out of sports altogether. At El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu, we ensure that fun remains a priority—whether it’s through games to teach new techniques, friendly in-house competitions like Ruckus in the Hills, or celebrating milestones in class.

By keeping Jiu Jitsu engaging and rewarding, we help kids develop a lifelong love for movement, fitness, and personal growth.

The Long-Term Impact of Jiu Jitsu for Youth

Dr. Gould’s findings remind us that the true value of youth sports lies in the long-term impact on a child’s character and mindset. At El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu, we’re proud to contribute to this journey. Every young student who steps on the mat learns to be a little braver, a little more focused, and a little more resilient—skills they’ll carry with them long after they leave the gym.

We’re inspired by Dr. Gould’s vision of youth sports as a transformative experience, and we remain committed to providing the best possible environment for young athletes in our community.

If you’re a parent looking for a program where your child can build physical skills and grow as a person, come visit us at El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu. Let’s help your child reach their full potential—on and off the mat.

Whether you live in Cameron Park, Folsom Ranch, or right here in El Dorado Hills, our program is a welcoming space for children of all backgrounds and experience levels.

Why Choose Jiu Jitsu for Your Child?

Jiu Jitsu is often called the “gentle art” because it emphasizes technique, leverage, and problem-solving over brute strength. It’s a fantastic way for children to develop physical and mental agility while having fun in a safe, supportive environment. Beyond the techniques, students learn to:

• Build Self-Confidence: Overcoming challenges on the mat translates to real-world confidence.

• Practice Self-Control: Our structured classes teach focus and patience, crucial skills for school and beyond.

• Develop Resilience: Kids learn how to fail gracefully, get back up, and try again—a valuable lesson for life.

Program Highlights

Our youth program is tailored to meet the developmental needs of three age groups:

1. Peewees (Ages 4–7): Classes focus on basic motor skills, playful drills, and building comfort with movement.

2. Kids (Ages 7–10): Students begin learning foundational Jiu Jitsu techniques while reinforcing teamwork and respect.

3. Juniors (Ages 11–17): Advanced training prepares young grapplers for competitions and life’s challenges.

Each class incorporates our monthly “Mat Chat,” where we discuss key life skills such as integrity, humility, and bravery. These conversations tie martial arts training to everyday situations, helping our students grow into well-rounded individuals.

Youth Classes Back in the Gi at El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu – Plus Our Gi Swap and Teen Scholarship!

This month marks an exciting return to gi training for our youth classes at El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu after a summer of nogi training. Students will now have the chance to build upon their nogi skills by adding the intricate techniques of gi training, where grips, fabric control, and different submissions come into play.

To ensure all of our students are ready for this transition, we’re hosting a Gi Swap. Here’s how it works:

  • Trade: Swap your old gi for one that fits better.
  • Leave One: Got an extra gi? Leave it for someone else to use.
  • Take One: If you need a gi, grab one for free from the swap pile.

This is a great way to make sure everyone has what they need, and it reinforces the sense of community we’re building at our gym.

Guardian El Dorado Hills Scholarship for Teens

We’re also proud to offer the Guardian El Dorado Hills scholarship, which provides financial assistance for teen students to train in Jiu Jitsu. This scholarship is part of our commitment to making martial arts accessible to all and helping teens benefit from the physical and mental growth that Jiu Jitsu fosters.

Whether you’re coming back after a summer of nogi or just starting your Jiu Jitsu journey, we’re excited to support you with the tools and opportunities you need.

El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu: Transition to Gi in Youth Classes Starts Today!

Today marks an exciting transition at El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu as all of our youth classes—Peewee, Kids, and Juniors—move from No-Gi to Gi training. This shift will help our young athletes focus on the fundamentals of traditional Jiu Jitsu, providing them with new challenges and techniques to master.

Wearing the gi brings a different dynamic to training, as students will learn to utilize grips, manage the opponent’s clothing, and develop a deeper understanding of leverage and control. It’s also an excellent opportunity to further instill discipline and respect, as wearing the uniform reinforces these important values.

What Does This Mean for Students?

  • New Skills: Students will now learn how to apply techniques that involve the use of the gi, including lapel chokes, grip breaks, and gi-specific sweeps and submissions.
  • Discipline and Respect: The gi is a symbol of the martial arts tradition. Wearing it encourages mindfulness, respect, and care for the uniform and each other.
  • Excitement and Growth: Gi training challenges students to expand their game, making them more well-rounded grapplers.

Gi Rentals for New Students and Trials

If you’re new to the gym or trying out a class, we’ve made it easy! El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu offers gi rentals for new students and trial members. When you arrive for class, let us know you’d like to rent a gi, and we’ll provide you with on for free during your first week. This allows you to experience gi training without needing to purchase your own right away.

Remember to have your gi clean and ready for each class, and we look forward to seeing how our young athletes grow and develop in this new phase of their training!

See you on the mats!

Youth Jiu Jitsu at El Dorado Hills: The Role of Parent Participation and the Power of Silent Support

At El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu, our youth classes are a place for learning, growth, and fun. Parents play a crucial role in this process, but often in ways that differ from traditional sports environments. In Jiu Jitsu, parent participation is essential, but it takes on a unique form—one that emphasizes silent support over direct cheering.

A Different Approach to Encouragement

In many sports, parents are often encouraged to cheer from the sidelines, shouting out words of encouragement or advice. However, in the world of Jiu Jitsu, the focus is on fostering independence, mental clarity, and resilience in young students. This is where the concept of “no direct cheering” comes into play.

When a parent is constantly shouting instructions or encouragement, it can actually add pressure and distract their child from the task at hand. In Jiu Jitsu, where focus and adaptability are key, children need the space to think critically, make decisions, and learn from both success and failure. Silent support allows them to do just that. It helps them build confidence in their own abilities, without feeling the need to perform for others.

We value coaching, and giving important feedback to athletes at the right time. We want parents to understand the difference between cheering and coaching and understand the various support systems that exist in the development of a young athlete and martial artist.

The Value of Silent Support

Silent support doesn’t mean parents take a passive role. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. It means parents are present, attentive, and engaged in their child’s journey, without directly influencing their experience on the mat. Here’s how parents can offer silent support during Jiu Jitsu classes:

  1. Be Present: Simply being there for your child shows them that you care and that their progress matters. Your quiet presence on the sidelines allows them to know they’re supported without the need for constant verbal reinforcement.
  2. Celebrate Milestones, Not Every Moment: Jiu Jitsu is a long journey filled with ups and downs. Rather than celebrating every move, wait for those bigger milestones—whether it’s mastering a new technique, earning a stripe, or simply persevering through a tough session. This teaches patience and the value of persistence.
  3. Encourage Reflection: After class, take the time to talk with your child about what they learned or what challenges they faced. This helps them process their experience and gives you an opportunity to provide positive reinforcement away from the immediate pressure of performance.
  4. Support the Process, Not Just the Result: One of the core lessons of Jiu Jitsu is that progress often comes through small, incremental improvements. Parents can reinforce this by praising effort, determination, and focus, rather than just outcomes.

Building Confidence on the Mat

By refraining from direct cheering, we give our youth students the room to grow into confident, self-reliant individuals. They learn to trust themselves and rely on their own problem-solving abilities. The absence of vocal instructions from the sidelines also helps them stay in the moment, developing the awareness and adaptability needed for success in Jiu Jitsu.

Join Us in Cultivating Independence and Growth

At El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu, we encourage parents to actively participate in their child’s journey, but in ways that cultivate independence and personal growth. Our approach to parent participation and silent support creates an environment where young students can thrive off the mats.

We invite you to visit our Peewee, Kids, and Juniors classes to see this philosophy in action. With the right balance of guidance and quiet encouragement, your child will develop the skills, confidence, and character to succeed in Jiu Jitsu—and in life.

Colin’s Victory at Jiu Jitsu Con Kids Tournament in Las Vegas

This past weekend, El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu had the privilege of witnessing one of its youngest members, Colin, dominate at the Jiu Jitsu Con Kids Tournament in Las Vegas. Competing against top talent from across the country, Colin showcased not only his skill but also the determination and discipline that we strive to instill in all our students.

Colin fought three tough matches, winning two by submission—an impressive feat that highlights his technical ability and mental toughness. His journey to the podium was a testament to his hard work and dedication, and we couldn’t be prouder of how he represented our gym.

The atmosphere in Las Vegas was electric, and Colin’s success was a reflection of the support from his teammates, coaches, and family. Every time he stepped on the mat, he carried with him the values of perseverance and respect that are at the core of our training philosophy.

Congratulations to Colin for his tremendous performance! We can’t wait to see what’s next for him as he continues to grow in the sport. His win is an inspiration to all the kids at our gym, reminding us that with focus and effort, great things can happen.

IBJJF World Master and JJ Con Kids recap for El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu

At the IBJJF World Masters and Jiu Jitsu Con, our team showcased remarkable skill and determination, with several standout performances that highlighted our community’s dedication to growth.

Jon made a triumphant return, capturing gold in the brown belt Master 5 division after four hard-fought victories. His journey to the top was especially significant given last year’s disappointment, making this win a testament to his perseverance and progress.

In the black belt Master 7 division, Allan dominated his first two matches, showcasing his technical prowess. Though he fell short in the final, his silver medal reflects his strong performance and the high level of competition.

Ken battled through four challenging matches in the blue belt Master 1 division, reaching the finals with a string of impressive victories. The final match was incredibly close, and despite losing by a referee’s decision, Ken’s silver medal was well-earned.

At Jiu Jitsu Con, our young competitor Colin delivered an outstanding performance, winning three dominant matches to take gold. His achievement is a sign of his bright future in the sport.

We also had strong showings from Kiet, Jerel, Aaron, Ryan, Brad, Danny, Raina, and Leo, who all gave their best efforts on the mat. Although they did not medal this time, their performances reflected significant improvements and a relentless pursuit of excellence.

But beyond the medals and accolades, what truly stands out is the sense of camaraderie and commitment to improvement that permeates our gym. Whether competing on the world stage or training at home, everyone is focused on making continuous improvements to each other’s game—be it in technique, competition strategy, or overall performance. This collective dedication ensures that, as a team, we are always growing and pushing each other to new heights.
