Last Saturday, our team represented El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu with heart and dedication at the JJWL (Jiu Jitsu World League) tournament in Stockton. This event brought together grapplers of all ages, levels, and styles, making it a thrilling experience for both competitors and supporters. In our 6am sessions, we break down this concept so that students understand not only how to apply kuzushi, but also how to recognize when their opponent is off-balance. What to Expect in a 6am Judo Takedown Class

Our 6am Judo takedown classes are designed to be both challenging and accessible to all levels, from beginners to advanced students. Each session is structured to focus on specific throws and techniques, starting with warm-ups that emphasize mobility and body control.

After warming up, we dive into drills for kuzushi, learning how to identify and exploit points of imbalance. This leads into practice for various takedowns, with a focus on timing, technique, and blending movements. Whether it’s a classic throw like osoto gari or a transitional takedown, our instruction aims to make each move accessible and understandable.

Finally, we incorporate live drills, giving students the chance to practice in a realistic setting while receiving feedback from our experienced instructors. The goal is not only to execute the techniques but to understand the principles behind each move so they become second nature.

Building Bravery on the Mat: November’s Youth ‘Mat Chat’ at El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu

In November, our youth program at El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu will focus on a life skill that applies both on and off the mat: bravery. Through our monthly ‘mat chat,’ we aim to help our young students understand that bravery isn’t just about big, heroic actions—it’s also about showing courage in everyday situations, standing up for what’s right, and pushing through challenges.

What Is Bravery?

We’ll start by discussing what bravery looks like in different forms. For some, it might mean facing their fears, like trying a challenging new move in Jiu Jitsu. For others, it could mean speaking up in a tough situation or supporting a friend who’s going through a hard time. We want our students to recognize that bravery doesn’t mean being fearless; it means acting despite the fear.

Bravery on the Mat

In Jiu Jitsu, bravery often shows up as perseverance. For our younger students, bravery might mean stepping onto the mat to spar, trying a new technique, or challenging themselves against a stronger opponent. We encourage them to face these challenges with an open mind, reminding them that the true measure of bravery isn’t whether they win or lose, but that they show up and try their best.
