At El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu, perseverance, hard work, and resilience are the core values that define our community. These principles were exemplified by Jon’s remarkable achievement at the IBJJF World Masters, where he captured gold in the brown belt Master 5 division. This victory is not just a testament to his skill on the mats, but also to his unwavering determination and the obstacles he overcame to reach this pinnacle.
Last year, Jon’s journey at the World Masters ended in disappointment as he fell short of placing. For many, such a setback might have been disheartening, but for Jon, it was a spark that ignited an even greater fire within him. Instead of dwelling on the loss, he used it as motivation, returning to the gym with renewed focus and dedication.
The road to gold was anything but easy. Jon faced numerous challenges, both on and off the mat. Injuries, personal setbacks, and the relentless grind of training at a high level could have derailed his progress. But with the support of his family and teammates at El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu, Jon pushed through every obstacle. His journey is a reminder that success is not about the absence of hardship, but about how we respond to it.
Jon’s victory at the World Masters is a proud moment for all of us at El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu. It’s a shining example of what can be achieved with persistence, hard work, and a never-give-up attitude. For our members, especially those who may be facing their own struggles, Jon’s story is an inspiration to keep pushing forward, no matter the odds.
As we celebrate Jon’s incredible achievement, we are reminded that every victory, big or small, is a step towards becoming the best version of ourselves. Congratulations, Jon, on your well-deserved gold medal! Your success is a beacon of what’s possible with heart, grit, and the right mindset. We’re all proud to have you as part of the El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu team.
At El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu, we take immense pride in the achievements of our athletes and coaches. One of the most recent and remarkable successes comes from Ryan Loder, who has been crowned The Ultimate Fighter champion! This incredible accomplishment not only highlights Ryan’s dedication and skill but also underscores the importance of the mentorship provided by our very own Coach Eliot Kelly.
Ryan Loder: A Champion’s Journey
Ryan Loder’s journey to becoming The Ultimate Fighter champion is a testament to his relentless work ethic, technical prowess, and mental toughness. A former Division 1 wrestler with a deep-rooted passion for martial arts, Ryan has always been a fierce competitor. His transition to mixed martial arts was marked by his determination to master all aspects of the game, from striking to grappling, and everything in between.
In the octagon, Ryan’s wrestling background has been a cornerstone of his success, allowing him to control his opponents and dictate the pace of the fight. But what truly sets Ryan apart is his ability to blend his wrestling with high-level jiu jitsu and striking, making him a well-rounded and formidable fighter.
Coach Eliot Kelly:
Behind every great fighter is a great coach, and for Ryan Loder, Eliot has been involved as a coach in the grappling arts. Eliot’s extensive experience in jiu jitsu and his deep understanding of the sport have been instrumental in Ryan’s development as a mixed martial artist. As one of the coaches at El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu, Eliot has consistently emphasized the importance of discipline, strategy, and adaptability—qualities that have clearly paid off for Ryan.
Eliot’s coaching philosophy is centered around the idea of continuous improvement, or “kaizen.” He encourages his students to always seek out areas for growth, whether in technique, conditioning, or mental fortitude. This mindset has not only helped Ryan refine his skills but also prepared him to face the toughest challenges in The Ultimate Fighter competition.
A Celebration for the Community
Ryan Loder’s victory is not just a personal achievement; it’s a win for the greater Sacramento area. It serves as a powerful reminder of what can be accomplished through hard work, dedication, and the right guidance. For our students, both young and old, Ryan’s success is an inspiration to strive for greatness in their own martial arts journeys.
As we celebrate Ryan’s victory, we also extend our deepest gratitude to Coach Eliot Kelly for his unwavering commitment to his students and his role in shaping champions both on and off the mat.
Looking Ahead
The future is bright for Ryan Loder, and we’re excited to see what’s next for this rising star in the world of mixed martial arts. As for our community at El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu, we will continue to support and learn from both Ryan and Eliot, as they exemplify the spirit of excellence that we strive for every day.
Whether you’re a seasoned practitioner or just starting your martial arts journey, Ryan Loder’s story is a powerful example of where dedication and the right coaching can take you. Join us on the mats at El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu and be part of a community where champions are made.
Starting a martial art is an exciting journey that can offer numerous benefits, from physical fitness to mental resilience. Whether you’re stepping onto the mat for the first time or considering joining a new academy, asking the right questions can set you on the path to success. At El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu, we believe that a thoughtful approach to beginning your martial arts journey is essential. Here are three important questions to ask when starting:
1. What are Your Goals?
Before diving into training, it’s crucial to understand why you’re starting martial arts in the first place. Are you looking to get in shape, learn self-defense, compete in tournaments, or find a supportive community? Knowing your goals will help you choose the right academy, the appropriate style, and the training intensity that suits your needs. At El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu, we offer a range of classes designed to meet different goals, from competitive training to classes focused on fitness and self-defense. Whatever your objectives, having a clear sense of what you want to achieve will keep you motivated and focused as you progress.
2. What is the Culture of the Academy?
Every martial arts academy has its unique culture, and finding one that aligns with your values is essential. Some schools may emphasize competition, while others focus more on self-defense or personal development. Take the time to visit the academy, observe a class, and speak with the instructors and students. Do you feel welcomed and supported? Is there a sense of camaraderie? At El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu, we pride ourselves on creating a positive, inclusive environment where everyone, from beginners to advanced practitioners, feels like part of the team. Our community is built on respect, discipline, and a shared passion for learning and growth.
3. What is the Instructor’s Background and Teaching Style?
The quality of instruction you receive will significantly impact your martial arts journey. It’s important to understand the instructor’s background, their experience in the martial art, and their teaching style. Are they approachable and patient? Do they emphasize technique, conditioning, or strategy? At El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu, our instructors bring a wealth of experience and a passion for teaching. We believe in providing detailed instruction tailored to each student’s learning style, ensuring that everyone can progress at their own pace while mastering the fundamentals. Whether you’re learning a new technique or refining your skills, our instructors are dedicated to helping you reach your full potential.

Flexibility is often an overlooked component of physical fitness, but for Jiu Jitsu practitioners, it is a crucial aspect that can significantly enhance performance, reduce injury risk, and improve overall well-being. At El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu, we understand the importance of incorporating flexibility training into our routines to help our members reach their full potential on the mats.
Why Flexibility Matters in Jiu Jitsu
In Jiu Jitsu, having a good range of motion allows for more effective execution of techniques and transitions between positions. Flexibility can enhance your ability to perform submissions, escapes, and guard passes. For instance, executing a triangle choke requires significant hip flexibility, while maintaining a tight guard demands flexible hamstrings and lower back muscles.
Moreover, flexibility training helps in injury prevention. Tight muscles are more prone to strains and tears. By regularly stretching and maintaining a good range of motion, practitioners can minimize the risk of common injuries such as muscle strains and ligament tears.
The Science Behind Flexibility Training
Research shows that flexibility training can improve muscular performance and joint mobility. A study published in the *Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research* found that incorporating flexibility exercises into a workout routine can enhance athletic performance by increasing the range of motion and reducing muscle stiffness .
Flexibility training is not just about static stretching. Dynamic stretching, proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF), and other techniques can all contribute to improved flexibility. Each type of stretching has its benefits, with dynamic stretching being particularly useful as a warm-up to prepare muscles for activity, and PNF being effective in increasing static flexibility through a combination of stretching and muscle contraction.
Insights from Kit Laughlin
Kit Laughlin, a renowned expert in flexibility and mobility, emphasizes the importance of flexibility training for both athletes and non-athletes. Laughlin’s approach combines various stretching techniques to address individual needs and limitations, focusing on improving overall body function and reducing pain.
According to Laughlin, flexibility training should be personalized and progressive. He advocates for a methodical approach where practitioners gradually increase the intensity and duration of stretches. This progressive overload principle ensures that the body adapts to the increased demands, leading to sustained improvements in flexibility over time.
Laughlin also highlights the mental benefits of flexibility training. Engaging in regular stretching routines can promote relaxation and reduce stress, contributing to better mental health and a more focused mindset during training and competition.
Integrating Flexibility Training at El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu
At El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu, we incorporate flexibility training into our classes and encourage members to engage in regular stretching routines. Here are some tips and techniques to enhance your flexibility:
Dynamic Warm-Ups: Start your training session with dynamic stretches such as leg swings, arm circles, and torso twists. These movements help increase blood flow to the muscles and prepare your body for the demands of Jiu Jitsu.
Post-Training Stretching: After your training session, perform static stretches focusing on major muscle groups used in Jiu Jitsu. Hold each stretch for 20-30 seconds, ensuring you feel a gentle pull but not pain.
PNF Stretching: Incorporate PNF stretching into your routine. This involves stretching a muscle, contracting it isometrically against resistance, and then stretching it again to increase the range of motion.
Consistency: Like any other aspect of training, consistency is key. Dedicate time each day to work on your flexibility, and over time, you will notice significant improvements.
Flexibility training is an essential component of a well-rounded Jiu Jitsu practice. By improving your range of motion, you can enhance your performance, reduce the risk of injury, and achieve a higher level of overall fitness. At El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu, we are committed to helping our members incorporate effective flexibility training into their routines, drawing on the latest research and expert insights from figures like Kit Laughlin. Embrace flexibility training as a vital part of your Jiu Jitsu journey, and experience the benefits both on and off the mats.

Starting Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is an exciting journey, whether you’re aiming for self-defense, fitness, or competition. One of the most crucial steps in this journey is choosing the right gym. With so many options out there, it can be overwhelming to know what to look for. At El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu, we’ve put together some essential tips to help you find the perfect gym to meet your needs.
1. Instructors
The quality of instruction is paramount in your BJJ journey. Look for gyms with experienced, reputable instructors who have a solid background in BJJ. Instructors should be able to explain techniques and provide individual attention. Belt level alone can be misleading when determining someone’s qualification, so don’t be misled by the color of the belt someone is wearing. At El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu, our instructors are not only skilled practitioners but also passionate teachers dedicated to helping each student progress.
2. Welcoming Atmosphere
The environment of the gym should be friendly and welcoming. A positive atmosphere fosters learning and growth. When you visit a gym, take note of how the staff and members interact with newcomers. Are they approachable and willing to help? A supportive community can make a significant difference in your training experience.
3. Cleanliness and Safety
Cleanliness is a critical factor in any martial arts gym. Mats and equipment should be regularly cleaned to prevent infections and injuries. The gym should also have a clear protocol for injuries and emergencies. At El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu, we prioritize the health and safety of our members, ensuring a clean and hygienic training environment.
4. Class Structure and Schedule
Consider the class structure and schedule. A good BJJ gym will have systems in place for different skill levels, including beginners, and have a variety of class times to fit different schedules. Look for a structured curriculum that covers all aspects of BJJ, from basics to advanced techniques. El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu offers a comprehensive schedule with classes designed to accommodate both beginners and advanced practitioners.
5. Student Progression
A quality gym will have a clear system for tracking and promoting student progression. This includes regular assessments and promotions based on skill and dedication. It’s motivating to see your progress and have goals to work towards. Our gym follows a structured curriculum with regular evaluations to ensure that our students are continuously improving.
6. Trial Classes
Many gyms offer trial classes. Take advantage of these opportunities to get a feel for the gym’s atmosphere, teaching style, and community. It’s an excellent way to determine if the gym is the right fit for you. El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu welcomes potential members to join us for a trial class to experience our training environment firsthand.
7. Additional Programs and Community
Beyond regular classes, consider what additional programs and community events the gym offers. Seminars, Q&A sessions, competition training, open training after class, and social events can enrich your BJJ experience and help you integrate into the community. At El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu, we regularly host events, seminars, and open sessions to foster a strong and connected community.
Choosing the right BJJ gym is a personal decision that can significantly impact your martial arts journey. By considering factors such as qualified instructors, welcoming atmosphere, cleanliness, class structure, student progression, trial classes, and additional programs, you can find a gym that aligns with your goals and values.
At El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu, we strive to provide an environment where students of all levels can thrive. Whether you’re just starting or looking to take your training to the next level, we invite you to join our community and discover the benefits of training with us.

Embarking on a martial arts journey is a transformative experience that offers numerous physical, mental, and social benefits. At El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu, we pride ourselves on creating an inclusive and dynamic environment where beginners and seasoned practitioners alike can thrive. One of the unique aspects of our training is the synergistic integration of wrestling with no-gi grappling and judo with gi jiu-jitsu, providing our students with a comprehensive and effective martial arts education.
The Power of Synergy in Martial Arts
Synergy in martial arts means combining different styles and techniques to create a more powerful and versatile skill set. At El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu, we believe that blending wrestling, no-gi grappling, and judo with gi jiu-jitsu allows our students to experience the full spectrum of grappling arts, enhancing their overall capability and understanding.
Wrestling and No-Gi Grappling
Wrestling is a core component of our no-gi grappling curriculum. Known for its explosive takedowns, control, and positional dominance, wrestling provides a solid foundation for any grappler. By incorporating wrestling techniques, we ensure that our students develop the skills necessary to control and manipulate their opponents in a no-gi setting. This includes learning how to execute takedowns, maintain top position, and escape from disadvantageous positions.
Our no-gi grappling classes also emphasize the fluidity and speed that are characteristic of this style. Without the gi, practitioners rely more on leverage, timing, and body mechanics, making it an excellent complement to traditional gi jiu-jitsu. The combination of wrestling’s raw power and no-gi’s technical finesse creates well-rounded grapplers who can adapt to any situation on the mat.
Judo and Gi Jiu-Jitsu
Judo, with its emphasis on throws, sweeps, and submissions, is the perfect partner for gi jiu-jitsu. Training in the gi allows for a different range of techniques and strategies that are not possible in no-gi grappling. The grips and controls afforded by the gi enable practitioners to execute a variety of throws and submissions with precision and control.
At El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu, we incorporate judo techniques into our gi classes to enhance our students’ ability to take down opponents and transition seamlessly into ground fighting. Judo’s principles of balance, leverage, and momentum are integral to mastering gi jiu-jitsu. By training in both disciplines, our students develop a deep understanding of how to use their opponents’ movements against them, creating opportunities for effective takedowns and submissions.
A Comprehensive Martial Arts Education
Our approach to martial arts education is holistic, focusing not just on physical techniques but also on mental resilience, discipline, and respect. Whether you are a beginner starting your martial arts journey or an experienced practitioner looking to expand your skill set, our curriculum is designed to challenge and inspire you.

Today was an action-packed day at our kids camp, filled with excitement, learning, and lots of laughter. The day kicked off with a Jiu Jitsu class, where the older kids took on the role of leaders, guiding the younger ones through some essential techniques. It was inspiring to see the camaraderie and teamwork as they practiced the knee cut pass, single-leg takedown, and hip bump sweep.
Learning Through Leading
Our Jiu Jitsu session was a highlight of the day. The older campers showed remarkable patience and skill as they taught the younger kids. This peer-led approach not only reinforced their own understanding of the techniques but also fostered a sense of responsibility and leadership. The knee cut pass, single-leg takedown, and hip bump sweep became more than just moves; they became a shared experience that bonded the kids together.
Game Time Galore
After the Jiu Jitsu class, the camp erupted into a whirlwind of games and friendly competition. The boat races were a hit, with each team creatively transporting their “boats,” which were mats, across to the finish line. It was a test of coordination and teamwork as campers laughed and strategized together. Relay races had everyone cheering, while sumo matches brought out the competitive spirit in the kids, as they tried to outmaneuver each other in a fun, safe environment. Dodgeball and soccer were crowd favorites, offering high-energy fun and a chance for the kids to showcase their athletic abilities. The unique addition of Jiu Jitsu chess added a strategic twist to the day. This game combined the mental challenges of chess with the physical movements of Jiu Jitsu, encouraging kids to think several steps ahead and apply their Jiu Jitsu knowledge in a new way. Hurdles were the perfect way to channel their energy into overcoming physical challenges, promoting agility and determination.
A Lesson in Integrity
In between the games and activities, we took some time to discuss the importance of integrity. We explored how the lessons learned on the mat can be applied off the mat in our everyday lives. The kids shared ideas about how they can practice integrity at home and school, emphasizing honesty, responsibility, and doing the right thing, even when no one is watching. It was heartwarming to hear their thoughtful insights and commitment to personal growth.
Looking Ahead: Kids Night Out
As the day wrapped up, excitement began to build for our upcoming Kids Night Out on August 3rd. This event promises to be an evening filled with fun activities, games, and the chance to build even stronger friendships. It’s a wonderful opportunity for the kids to enjoy a night of adventure and camaraderie in a safe, supervised environment.
Today’s camp was a testament to the power of play, learning, and leadership. The kids not only honed their Jiu Jitsu skills but also learned valuable life lessons about integrity and teamwork. We can’t wait to see them continue to grow and thrive, both on and off the mat. Mark your calendars for August 3rd, and get ready for an unforgettable Kids Night Out!
