Kids Camp Adventure: A Day of Fun and Learning

Today was an action-packed day at our kids camp, filled with excitement, learning, and lots of laughter. The day kicked off with a Jiu Jitsu class, where the older kids took on the role of leaders, guiding the younger ones through some essential techniques. It was inspiring to see the camaraderie and teamwork as they practiced the knee cut pass, single-leg takedown, and hip bump sweep.

Learning Through Leading

Our Jiu Jitsu session was a highlight of the day. The older campers showed remarkable patience and skill as they taught the younger kids. This peer-led approach not only reinforced their own understanding of the techniques but also fostered a sense of responsibility and leadership. The knee cut pass, single-leg takedown, and hip bump sweep became more than just moves; they became a shared experience that bonded the kids together.

Game Time Galore

After the Jiu Jitsu class, the camp erupted into a whirlwind of games and friendly competition. The boat races were a hit, with each team creatively transporting their “boats,” which were mats, across to the finish line. It was a test of coordination and teamwork as campers laughed and strategized together. Relay races had everyone cheering, while sumo matches brought out the competitive spirit in the kids, as they tried to outmaneuver each other in a fun, safe environment. Dodgeball and soccer were crowd favorites, offering high-energy fun and a chance for the kids to showcase their athletic abilities. The unique addition of Jiu Jitsu chess added a strategic twist to the day. This game combined the mental challenges of chess with the physical movements of Jiu Jitsu, encouraging kids to think several steps ahead and apply their Jiu Jitsu knowledge in a new way. Hurdles were the perfect way to channel their energy into overcoming physical challenges, promoting agility and determination.

A Lesson in Integrity

In between the games and activities, we took some time to discuss the importance of integrity. We explored how the lessons learned on the mat can be applied off the mat in our everyday lives. The kids shared ideas about how they can practice integrity at home and school, emphasizing honesty, responsibility, and doing the right thing, even when no one is watching. It was heartwarming to hear their thoughtful insights and commitment to personal growth.

Looking Ahead: Kids Night Out

As the day wrapped up, excitement began to build for our upcoming Kids Night Out on August 3rd. This event promises to be an evening filled with fun activities, games, and the chance to build even stronger friendships. It’s a wonderful opportunity for the kids to enjoy a night of adventure and camaraderie in a safe, supervised environment.

Today’s camp was a testament to the power of play, learning, and leadership. The kids not only honed their Jiu Jitsu skills but also learned valuable life lessons about integrity and teamwork. We can’t wait to see them continue to grow and thrive, both on and off the mat. Mark your calendars for August 3rd, and get ready for an unforgettable Kids Night Out!

Jiu Jitsu Kids Camp in El Dorado Hills

I recently ran my first Jiu Jitsu Camp for ages five and older. In the past all of the camps have been seven and up. It was a full camp and the most fun one yet. Having the younger kids there came with some new challenges but I was prepared for them.
The main difference having the younger kids in camp is being ready for the shorter attention span. I had to be ready to refocus the group or change activities much more often than when seven year olds were the youngest kids there. Another big difference was the class style had to be more of a peewee/kids hybrid class with the kids split into groups and a lot of hands-on coaching. For the next camp I will probably allow this age group to come again. It was fun having some of the peewee kids there.
For the class portion of camp we did a fun warm up and practiced some basics. After that we practiced arm bars on the coaches and did some Jiu Jitsu matches. There was a very wide variety of skill and experience levels in the room along with the variety of ages. After class we played all of the mat games that we have played before at camp with the addition of a free for all snow ball fight. We ended the day with some snacks and board games. I haven’t picked a date for the next camp yet but I am excited to start planning for it!

Summer Jiu Jitsu Camp in El Dorado Hills in June

June Jiu Jitsu Camp
I’m excited to announce that we will be hosting another Jiu Jitsu camp for the kids June 13th and 15th. This camp will be for ages seven and older. No Jiu Jitsu experience is needed to attend this camp, in fact I think it is a great first time Jiu Jitsu experience.
We will begin with an hour of Jiu Jitsu class where the kids will learn some basic techniques including takedowns, sweeps and guard passes. After the class we will make teams and start playing mat games. This is always a lot of fun. The kids will get to bond with their teammates and new friends while engaging in healthy competition. After the games are over we will have a snack and wind down with some board games.
I am expecting to get twenty campers signed up for this event and am excited to make it a fun and memorable experience for them. This will be the first No Gi camp that I have done so I am looking forward to making some teaching adjustments to the class section of camp and sharing some of my No Gi knowledge with the kids.

Spring Jiu Jitsu Camp
Over the Spring break I got to do another 4 days of Jiu Jitsu Camp. We did an hour and fifteen minutes of Jiu Jitsu class which included learning and reviewing the single leg takedown, the fireman carry, offensive and defensive basics from side control, the staple gun guard pass, and the flower sweep. The group of kids who participated in camp had different levels of experience with Jiu Jitsu, for some of them Jiu Jitsu camp was their first Jiu Jitsu class. It was cool to watch the more experienced kids mentoring the newer kids.

After the jiujitsu lesson we played a variety of mat games, which the kids always love. We started off with making teams and picking team names. Hearing the team names that the kids come up with is always one of my favorite parts of camp. After everyone had their name picked we got started with relay races, sumo matches, tug a war, dodgeball, sharks and minnows and freeze tag. It’s always fun to watch the combination of competition and camaraderie in the room during these games.

Once we Finished up with the mat games everyone stepped off the mat to have a snack and wind down playing board games. I plan on doing a few more of these camps this year. The kids seem to have a lot of fun with them and I enjoy planning and doing them.

Thanksgiving Week Kids Camp in El Dorado Hills Jiu Jitsu

EDH Jiu Jitsu will be offering a kids camp for kids age 5-15 this Thanksgiving week on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Our seasonal camp is a fun half day camp with an emphasis on learning and having fun through different activities like chess, jiu-jitsu and origami.

What will I do at kids camp?

Campers will be doing many things during the week. Each camp day is a little different from the other, but our activities include games like dodgeball, snakes in the grass, freeze tag, fireball, and other games. Jiu-Jitsu is also taught with an emphasis on self defense and anti bullying which is a little different from our typical Brazilian Jiu Jitsu lessons taught in the evening classes.

In addition to the physical activities we have with games and kids jiu-jitsu we also have time to sit down and play quietly. We’ve incorporated “no stress chess” for the younger children to learn and play chess, while teaching and allowing the older students to play chess. Other arts and crafts have been incorporated into camp with Japanese origami, Japanese calligraphy being the main activities. The students enjoy making their own ink on the ink stones and practicing different kanji characters with a brush.

Our seasonal camps also feature story telling and speeches or presentations by the campers. The story telling is a great time to talk about a seasonal activity, bullying, the environment, community service, kindness, and more.

EDH Jiu-Jitsu & Self Defense

Kids Camp in El Dorado Hills

Kids Camp El Dorado Hills had the first week of camp for kids age 5 and up. The camp is an opportunity for local children to learn jiujitsu, chess, and have fun moving. Healthy snacks of apples, almonds, cheese, and yogurt are provided to the campers are picked up fed and tired. The next week of camp will be JULY 31 – AUGUST 3.   NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY to join the camp! We welcome beginners to jiujitsu, chess, and anyone looking to learn, move, and have fun is welcome!

In the jiujitsu lessons the coaches teach the fundamental movements and positions of guard, mount, side control, back control, a strong stance. These fundamentals give students an opportunity to better understand strong positions that are advantageous in self defense and anti-bullying situations. From these positions the campers learned different movements and submissions to control their opponent. When working with a partner, students not only are learning about the physical space their body occupies, but also how to communicate with their peers. Communication is an integral component of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Campers are taught the importance of communicating with their body as well as their words to convey their thoughts. Developing healthy communication strategies at a young age leads to higher EQ, emotional intelligence.

In addition to jiujitsu and the lessons we are able to teach through it’s practice. The camp also includes the teaching and learning of chess. While jiujitsu is chess with the body, chess is jiujitsu with the mind! After a morning of games and lessons in jiujitsu and self defense, the campers are given a healthy snack and an opportunity to continue working on their communication. Since we have multiple levels of chess players, we incorporate peer mentorship, “No Stress Chess” (a chess set designed to teach the basic game while playing the game of chess). and some adult coaching. This allows all levels of chess players to have fun and keep up with the game. During chess, the campers are given an opportunity to calm down from the previously rigorous games and exercises and direct their focus and attention on the chess board. Even the most rambunctious children tend to focus in on learning and playing chess.

A strong component of our camp is the concept of learn through play.  To do this we design our games with technical lessons and concepts to develop leadership and/or teamwork. One example of a game we play is tug of war. In tug of war, the team concept is developed along with leadership. The leader of the group is responsible for helping to “unite” their group to pull all at once. At the end of the game, the winning team will assign a number to the losing team to practice a technique learning during the jiujitsu lesson. If the number 10 is picked, the losing team will do 10 arm bars (for example) and the winning team will perform half (5 in this case). In this example, leadership is developed by the vocal member of the group to pull the rope all at once. Teamwork is shown and developed when everyone works together to pull the rope all at once. Technical skills are developed after a winner and loser is established to disguise the repetitions practiced.

Along with the practice of jiujitsu, chess, and games we emphasize gratitude. We talk about gratitude at the end of each session and ask the campers what they are thankful for. Through out the day, an emphasis is made of saying thank you, writing a thank you card to take home and give to someone, and thinking about the things that are necessary to be thankful for.

Join us on our next camp experience in El Dorado Hills! We welcome new comers and look forward to having our current members join us for a fun half day of jiujitus, chess, gratitude projects and games! Next camp will be July 31st -August 3rd!
