BJJ Tour Livermore

The BJJ Tour came to Livermore, CA last Saturday for a tournament, which included divisions for Adults and Kids; in the Gi and NoGi. What was appealing about this tournament was that it was an IBJJF style tournament with double elimination for the kids competitors.
We had several competitors take part in the event and as usual, walked away with some medals and valuable experiences.
Kids Competitors:
- Ian competed in the Juniors 2 Grey Belt Gi division and won Silver.
- Kenny competed in the Juniors 3 Grey Belt Gi Division and won Bronze.
- Mason competed in the Pee Wees 1 Grey Belt Gi Division and Pee Wees 2 NoGi Division and won Silver in both events.
Adult Competitors:
- Brad competed in the Adult Medium Heavy White Belt Gi Division and unfortunately sustained a rib injury, half way through his first fight.
- Daniel competed in the Adult Featherweight NoGi Division and won his match with a Rear Naked Choke to win Gold.
- Tanner competed in the Adult Medium Heavy NoGi and Open divisions and won Gold in his weight class and Silver in the Absolute.
What we learned from the event was that we need to have the kids train with the expectation that they are preparing to fight intensely in competition. The kids tried to execute their game plans and what their coaches were telling them during their matches, but there was a lack of urgency that we can prepare for better. It was a great opportunity for them to experience this and draw some context to their weekly training.
The adults were amazing in terms of being coachable. They listened well and made slight to major adjustments during and between matches. The results were gaining great control positions and maintaining those positions, which resulted in winning matches and the event.
Overall, it was a great success as we gained confidence and learned as a team. These regional tournaments are excellent opportunities to prepare for National tournaments and to see what we need to work on as individuals and as a team.
